1. There has appeared in our time a particular class of books and articles which i sincerely and solemnly think may be called the sillest ever known among men. 우리 시대에, 인간에게 알려진 것들 중 가장 멍청한 것이라고 솔직하고 엄숙하게 생각하는 특정한 종류의 책이나 r글이 나타났다.

2. They are much more wild than the wildest romances of chivalry and much more dull than the dullest religious tract. 그 것들은 기사도의 낭만보다 더 터무니 없고, 종교책보다 훨씬 더 지루하다.

3. Moreover, the romances of chivalry were at least about chivalry; the religious tracts are about religion. 게다가 기사도의 낭만은 최소한 기사도에 고나한 것이고, 종교서는 종교에 관한 것이기라도 하다.

4. But these things are about nothing; they are about what is called success. 그러나 이 것들은 아무것도 아닌 것에 관한 것인데, 이 것들은 성공이라고 불리는 것에 관한 것이다.

5. On every bookstall, in every magazine, you may find works telling people how to succeed. 모든 책 선반과 모든 잡지에서 사람들에게 어떻게 성공하는지 알려주는 책을 찾을 수 있다. 6. They are books showing men how to succeed in writing books. 그 것들은 책을 쓰는데 있어 성공하는 법을 알려준다.

7. To begin with, of course, there is no such thing as Success. 물론, 처음부터 내가 하고자 하는 말은, 성공이라는 것은 없다라는 것이다.

8. Or, if you like to put it so, there is nothing that is not successful. 혹은, 그렇게 생각한다면 성공적이지 않은 것이라는 것도 없다. 

9. That a thing is successful merely means that it is; a millionaire is successful in being a millionaire any a donkey in being a donkey. 성공적이라는 것은 단순히 그러하다라는 것을 의미하는데, 백만장자는 백만장자라는 것에서 성공을 한 것이고 당나귀는 당나귀가 되어서 성공적인 것이다.

10. Any live man has succeeded in living; any dead man may have succeeded in committing suicide. 살아 있는 이들은 사는 데 성공했고, 죽은 이는 자살 하는데 성공한 것이다.

11. But, passing over the bad logic and bad philosophy in the phrase, we may take it, as these writers do, in the ordinary sense of success in obtaining money or worldly position. 그러나, 잘못된 철학과 논리는 간과한 채로, 이 작가들이 그러하듯 우리는 성공을 돈이나 세속적인 지위를 얻는 것에서 찾는다.

12. These writers profess to tell the ordianry man how he may succeed in his trade or speculation--how, if he is a builder, he may succeed as a builder; how, if he is a stockbroker, he may succeed as a stockbroker. 이 작가들은 평범한 이들에게 거래나 투기에 성공하는 법을 알려주는 척 한다. 건축가에겐 건축가로서 성공하는 법, 주식중개인이에는 주식중개인으로 성공하는 법을 알려주는 척한다.

13. They profess to show him how, if he is a grocer, he may become a sporting yachtsman; how, if he is a tenth-rate journalist, he may become a peer; and how, if he is a German Jew, he may become an Anglo Saxon.
